The ships need to be able to take one or two solid hits at the very least - if just one shot hits the fore cannons, cripples your ship, and exposes the flammable interior, you're gunna have a bad time. I think what sometimes happened is that you'd have a "flagship" - something as incredible and mind blowing as what's been described, but also very expensive and time consuming or complicated to build, or even quite delicate due to the complexity of the wiring/timings taking up more mass and leaving less in the budget for armor.
